I packed everything in my suitcase and left home. I was seventeen. Didn’t speak a word of English.
On the plane, getting out of the Northern Hemisphere for the first time in my life, I was thinking about the belief that all toilets in the Northern Hemisphere flush counter-clockwise while those in the Southern Hemisphere flush clockwise. I confirmed it was entirely false by googling after I landed and bought a SIM card at Auckland Airport.
I met beautiful people.
